Art by Georgia Papadakis

My intuition very often leads me to pair animal and human characteristics; it's one of my favorite things to do with a paintbrush. Since times ancient we have always had natural and strong associations of animals as symbols, often including them in our art and folklore. What these symbols may represent is part of our own personal and intuitive mythology.

When I feel my heart is fluttering and wants to rise up, to perch somewhere safely above the world I'm in, I might paint wings on a protective figure. When I feel like rearing and resisting, empowering myself, I might paint horses. The basics get put down quickly. Then there's this consuming trance-like part called "The Process", where I am working out mechanics, solving the puzzle of what goes where and how, and not really thinking about symbolism much at all, until finally I'm ready to show my painting! At which point, the viewer brings her own associations to the image, which are just as strong and sure as the impulse that got the painting started- so we come full circle and create a unique relationship between our two personal viewpoints or mythologies.
